Few photos

Down with the flu – so very little blogging for a while. Meanwhile, few photos of the Cherry Blossoms at DC, which were pretty spectacular.

Glimpses: San Diego and the Pacific Surfliner to Irvine

with 3 comments

Best quote on San Diego:

“….. Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale’s vagina.”

” No, there’s no way that’s correct.”…….. “Doesn’t it mean Saint Diego?”

” No. No. ”

” No, that’s – that’s what it means. Really. ”

” Agree to disagree. “

Exchange between Ron Burgundy and Veronica Corningstone in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, a passably funny, if silly, movie.

Just to let anyone who still bothers visiting this blog that I am not really missing in action. Just been very busy and any free time to be had is being consumed by this very exciting, eminently gripping even if sprawling (about 1000-pages and I am near 350 now) sci-fi and historical novel, Cyptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.

Meanwhile, enjoy the post-card-like qualities of this photo:

(somewhere in the Smoky Mountains, circa two weeks ago; posted party inspired by this)

End of the week silliness

with 5 comments

Tags and memes are like the 10W-40 of the blogosphere – you need them about every three months or so to keep the engines running smoothly and all. The latest bug of this nature to hit the desi blog-world, which possibly started here and then spread through this highly popular and eminent blogger, is quite literally silly. So the idea is that you are supposed to post a silly picture of yourself taken within the last five years (I fully expect ‘The Colonel‘ to appear at any moment now and declare all this to be ‘very silly’).

Still, seems like it has brought out many bloggers in their self-depreciatory best (Gaurav Mishra has nice gallery going).

Lurking in the hinterlands has its advantages – I usually slip under the radar whenever such memes are floating around. Unfortunately, this time I have been caught by another eminent blogger. But Unfortunately, a quick scan through the hard-drive of my work computer yields no pictures meeting the criteria. So here is the closest I could find:

I know – its my usual lame avatar – but I dunno if there is anything that is actually sillier than this. Also, as Confused kindly pointed out -I should note that a Bong (and a Pondit at that), cannot by definition, be silly (or is it that we define silliness; silly-me, always forgetting which way it is).

Will update later if something better is found.

Oh – I am supposed to tag five others – unfortunately, most of the regular blogs I read have already been tagged. Still I tag gawker (hopefully we can now see him at his gooselicious best), confused (I know its a repeat – but that lazy bum needs a second push), Sunil, Arundhati, and ……… (fill in your name here – means anybody else reading this and brave enough to take it upon themselves).

A small taste of Colorado

with one comment

The state of Colorado is big and beautiful with too many activities to indulge in. This trip was part discovering cool urban areas and part getting close to nature. We managed to go around Denver, Boulder (university and downtown area), Estes Park and drive through the Rocky Mountain National Park with a bit of hiking thrown in.

This an an appetizer if you will. Main entree with details soon, hopefully.
(click any picture to go to Flickr and choose larger image for details)

Proof that we were mile high in Denver(at the steps of the State Capitol). Favorite slogan in these parts: “In most other states being high would be a felony“.

There was a ‘cow parade‘ going on in Denver (This blogger would appreciate). This cow was the ‘coolest’ one on show IMO.

Denver downtown is full of old warehouses converted to loft apartments for urban living. Was impressed by the combined residential/commercial space use.

Denver and Fort Collins is home to many local breweries. This was outside the Wynkoop Brewery.

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) – near the foothills – about 8500ft elevation.

RMNP – near the tree-line.

RMNP – tundra vegetation. Nice view of mountains in the background.

Another view from over 12,000 ft.

Yet another. I wish I had wide angle lens. These pictures don’t do justice to the beauty of the view.

View of the mountains from the Grand Lake Lodge at the other end of the park. A thunderstorm was approaching the mountains.

These photos and more being gradually uploaded at Flickr.
