Recurring Decimals…..

Everything here is irrelevant

….where the fugg did that year go ?

We much prefer the Ha-ja-ba-ra-la world, where age cycles between 10 and 40 (see the clip below for reference, relevant scene comes on at 4:20).

(apologies to non-Bengali speaking crowd who will forever be denied of Sukumar Ray’s comic genius, sorry !!).

  3. Funny you should mention Ha-ja-ba-ra-la. A friend is in the process of launching a bilingual website (with A/V) having Bangla Shishu Sahitya as its main fare, aimed at 2nd (3rd/ 4th) gen non resident bongs. He has coaxed me into translating a few stories for him. It was all going nice until we hit on ha-ja-ba-ra-la. And I got stuck at, yes you guessed it, Chandrabindur ‘Cha’.

  4. A cat named Chandrabindu who spelt his name as “Chandrabindur chaw, beraler talbwa shaw, rumaler ma – holo chawshma” —-

‘Haans chhilo shawjaroo o, byakaran manina,
Hoye gelo haansjaroo, kemone ta janina …’

‘Hunko mukho hangla bari tar Bangla
    Mukhe tar hasi nei dekhechho?’

‘Headoffice er bawrobabu lokti bejaye shanto
tar je emon mathar byamo keu kokhono janto… ‘

A few favourite moments from an author who I consider the best satirist in Bengali literature.
And I agree, wish it were the same rule of cycling life between 10 and 40!

  6. Wonder what would happen if we could rebrand Hajabarala and re package and launch it world wide. Most of our great stuff excepting Tagore and Ray is largely under marketed.
