Recurring Decimals…..

Everything here is irrelevant

My own WTF post

with 4 comments

‘Tis the season for popularity of WTF posts, so I will jump on the bandwagon.

Without explicitly using the WTF term, Prem Panicker resorts to a needless rhetoric about ‘team India’ (and gets a link from Amit Varma)
(the context is someone in England trying to get in touch with Indian pace bowler Munaf Patel for a county job).

We have the bowler’s number, but there is no response just now, and there is a job offer coming his way he might want to know about. The weird bit? HK says every Indian player he spoke to, and he’s been hitting up all of them, say they have no number for Munaf, no email, no contact, no nothing. So much for ‘team’ India.

(emphasis mine)

Now if I understand it correctly, Prem P. feels there is a lack of team spirit just because none of the touring Indian players have Munaf’s phone number ? Either I am a dufus (a good possibility) or else I don’t understand the cause and effect here. See, I work with a large group at the laboratory but I do not carry around their personal phone number all the time. Our laboratory principal investigator does, our lab manager does. And there is a directory in our office which lists everyone’s number in cases of emergency. But that does not mean, when it comes to getting work done, we are not effective as a team.

Similarly, it’s the Indian cricket board’s responsibility to keep track of non-touring players. Team spirit does not mean players should necessarily be exchanging their personal phone numbers and e-mails. Really – that’s such an high-school teenager thing.

  1. Somewhat off topic: I hate the term “Team India” itself because it is coined by media(TOI and CNN_IBN) to show something special. Indian Team was correct language, whats the point with “Team India” ?? And when used with other teams, I get irritated – for eg: Team India and West Indies Team are playing today – why not Team West Indies ?

  2. Is Prem Panicker really that dumb to interpret it as some kind of disunity? I dont think so ..

  3. The problem, in my opinion, is that once some people spend a fair bit of time in a particular field, they think that they have a license to say whatever they want about anything in that field. Ever so often, they seem to feel compelled to draw deep insights from insignificant observations and expect the audience to bow in reverence.

This appears to be true not just for journalists (who never retire), but also for diplomats (who hit the lecture circuit after retirement), IAS officers (in pretty much every walk of life), sportsmen (who turn commentators and columnists), and pretty much every profession that I can think of.
