Recurring Decimals…..

Everything here is irrelevant

Still here….

For the few regulars still turning up – a note to say I haven’t fallen off from the under side of the planet. Enjoying the lovely weather and taking advantage of the very convenient walkways and river ferries to explore Brisbane. Still at a temporary hotel and internet connection is only possible from the few net-cafes (yeah, they still exist in this day and age of wireless) – hence blogging will be light till next week.

Two negative notes: Liquor prices are unbelievably high here. Leaving aside the distilled spirits, which (thanks to high import duties) are more than double the prices back in North Carolina (Smirnoff Vodka 700ml costs 37Aus$), even the cheapest six-pack of beer is 11Aus$ (~9US$). Its going to put a crimp on my regular cocktail experiments. Surprisingly though, drink prices at restaurants and bars are comparable to those in US. Go figure.
Second, cell phone plans are way too complicated – even the pre-paid ones provide too many choices.

More on the enjoyable stuff later.

  1. So does that mean the temporary hiatus on FCB is going to get a permanent status?

  2. Oh there you are are.. you were missed!
Suggestion – try micro breweries there. Might be cheaper and the beer is not as bad (from the 2 I drank).

  3. If I were thinking of moving to a new country, wifi and liquor prices would be two of the things I would definitely look into first;)

  4. @M: Hopefully not – have managed to bring in some liquor from US + duty free stuff + will pay
@Sakshi: Havent found any microbreweries yet – will keep an eye out. As I mentioned, it isnt too expensive to drink in bars. I guess the govt wants people to socialize !
@Brian: You will have to consider the fact that retirement plans and govt support for retirees is pretty good out here. In academia you get 17% matching contribution to your retirement plan (similar to 401K, called Superannuation here), no matter how much you contribute. Health coverage is provided for permanent residents. So even though taxes are 45% and the liquor and broadband prices are sky high (unrestricted broadband is about 80-90$/month), you can probably go with less savings
