Recommended listening: The Beatles in 1965 (NPR)

In the latest edition of NPR’s excellent music program, All Songs Considered, host Bob Boilen talks with Bruce Spizer , author of several books on the Beatles ,about the upcoming release of some early Beatles recordings. Extremely engaing discussion on the early popularity of the Beatles in America. They talk about, among other things, how different versions of the same songs ended up on various albums, the genesis of certain songs and other such fun stuff.

Particularly interesting are two musical excerpts played from these albums – both heavily featuring the sitar. One is the ‘Hard Day’s Night‘ played with a sitar and another is a version of ‘Help!‘ with thehighly recognizable James Bond theme mixed in at the beginning.

A must listen for all music fans – especially if you happen to be a Beatles fan.

You can hear the program here, or subscribe to the podcast from the website or iTunes.

PS – Also recommended is this DVD of the Concert for George performance held at the Royal Albert Hall in 2002; highlight of the show is a wonderful jugalbandi between Anoushka Shankar on the sitar and Eric Clapton on guitar.
