Regular programming….

…..such as it is, will resume soon. As in posts/rants/reviews on topics other than cricket.
As the all-mighty Lord (apparently prodded by the Dictator, who for some peculiar reasons thinks much too highly of American Football) pointed out, this blog has been possessed by cricket in recent times.
Should we blame the partisan Aussie media? Should we [...]

Declaring your race for visa application

Interesting - the visa application for Singapore actually asks you to state your race (e.g. ‘Malay, Chinese, Indian, Caucasian’). Some forms in the US, especially while applying for universities or jobs, do ask about race. However, it is mostly in a voluntary section so that you are not obligated to respond (in almost all cases [...]

When Bloggers Meet…

This is not a blog-meet per se - as in announced in advance with much fanfare,  heavily publicized and such - but an eminent blogger of the Indian blogosphere is dropping by the Pondit’s humble abode later today.
Much fun on the lines of drinking, eating and animated discussions about the state of the world [...]

Housekeeping notes

A week ago, I changed the template for the blog. I prefer this two columns on the right-side look as well as the better contrast between the fonts and the background. Not a big fan of the font-style or size that comes with it though. But since I am yet to find the perfect template [...]

All-nighters - a somewhat cryptic post

Staying up all night - whether to finish a project that I should have been working on for the past three months, or just to hang out and discuss deep philosophy with friends over booze and food (when I should have been working on the project)- used to be much easier when the body was [...]

Still life with commentator and ‘Black’ humour

We attended two programs over the weekend - both involved some commentary on the current state of politics (in the US), although the approaches were quite different. Friday evening, we went to a program entitled ‘Still life with Commentators’, involving a multimedia presentation by the trio of Vijay Iyer, Mike Ludd and Ibrahim Quarishi. Saturday [...]

Stop checking your Sitemeter !

…the biggest speed-bump to my writing is casual surfing on the net. The constant internet connection both at the lab and home is admittedly very useful whenever I need any quick scientific information or want to check out a reference. However, it is very difficult to resist the temptation of sneaking a quick glance at the Inbox, or finding out if there are any new headlines on the RSSReader. I guess I need something like this: the Temptation Blocker.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day !!

I am not Irish - but I do definitely love their beer and that wacky accent ! (I would also love to visit Ireland someday).
In my books, any celebration that involves drinking rocks !! Hence the green theme for the day.
I might go downtown later in the day and drink some green beer or [...]

Odds and ends

Several long posts are piling up as drafts, but I am really busy tying up some loose ends before I land up at Salt Lake City for a conference starting this weekend. Therefore more random thoughts as fillers. Read on if you must.

Tickling those grey cells

Some personal reminiscing on a former hobby, nay passsion: quizzing.
One activity that I sorely miss since coming to the US is quizzing. Back in India, I would try to attend as many quiz contests as possible: preferably as a participant, but at least as an audience. I used to be quite a news and [...]

And a new urban legend/e-mail Fwd is born

Coming soon to an Inbox near you:

I can sense the e-mails already pouring into the Snopes.com webmaster’s Inbox. A photographer took the above image (from the ground) near London on Saturday, apparently believing that the two airplanes were on a dangerous collision course. Of course, local civil aviation authorities have denied this and most experts [...]

This has to stop !

Going down the slippery slope of prolonged blog-inacitvity !! So here is a post.
The problem this time around is not that I don’t have anything to say. In fact there are too many things to talk about - several movies seen recently, books read, games watched etc. Question is: where to begin ?
“The White Rabbit [...]
