Mamma Mia !

The musical is fluffy, predictable and borderline chick-flick. The cynical view would be to dismiss it a silly exercise in stringing  together hits of ABBA around the barest of plots.
However, once you get past the initial 20-30 minutes dominated by cheesy teeny-bopper exuberance and  awkward chemistry among the three leading men, the movie lifts itself [...]

‘Arey… Gorpar-er lok moshai… Hindi ki keu sadhe bole….!?’

A wave of nostalgia induced by this post, led to an youtube-hunting session with a desire to revisit what is possibly one of the most memorable - not to mention comic - scences ever created in the history of Indian cinema :the meeting of Jatayu with Feluda and Topse on a train while it stops [...]

Khoya Khoya Chand

Kyun ………….Khoye Khoye Chand Ki Firak Mein Talash Mein Udas Hai Dil

Kyun………..Anpne Aap Se Khafa Khafa, Zara Zara Sa Naraaz Hai Dil
(full lyrics)

….asks the Man [1] in a moment of nirvanic clarity that (to my drunken mind) could possibly be achievable only under the influence of (1) one dry sapphire [...]

Falling Slowly……(link fixed)

….my current favorite song:

(link fixed, the I was trying to show the video of the song as sung at the Oscars, but I guess the Academy put an end to it )
The song, from the soundtrack of an Irish indie-film, Once, won the Oscars this year for Best Original Song (and featured in one [...]

Oscars

Love it, hate it, disrespect it, but can’t ignore it. Its time again for the pomp and glamor of the most celebrated of cinematic awards, the Oscars. Last year I managed to live-blog the event, suggest cocktails, offer a roundup etc - all thoroughly entertaining.
Unfortunately this year, I am further removed from the action, at [...]

Why ‘Al Pacino’ ?

(In which I officially start a new WTF category)
On the occasion of his birthday, Rediff calls Kamalhasan the ‘Al Pacino’ of Indian cinema. Apart from the idiotic - but widespread in the Indian media - compulsion to seek validation from the West (Hollywood in this case), I wonder why particularly Al Pacino ? Why [...]

Riverfire

Last Saturday was Riverfire, a half-an-hour fireworks spectacular that marks the beginning of the Riverfestival - kind of welcoming spring out here. We had a wonderful vantage point to watch the display that also included RAAF’s Roulettes and F1-11 flybys.

Unfortunately, I was not able to set-up my tripod - hence not too many good pictures [...]

Blessed are the…..

…..good folks at Cinematical, for bringing forth good news about the upcoming release of a spanking new Life of Brian DVD - The Immaculate Edition no less.

Bad news: you have to wait till November to lay your hand on these.

Chak De Rocks

Chak De India employs quite a few movie cliches - the underdog, woefully unmatched sports team winning in the end, individualism versus unity, (borderline) ethnic and gender stereotypes - but still manages to be exciting. The trick is pulled off because, as Jai Arjun notes, the filmmakers resist the urge to overdo the [...]

Mausam ka jhaunka…..

If there is anything more spiritually uplifting than listening to Gulzar’s poetry, it is listening to Gulzar recite it in his own rich baritone.

Recently, I have been playing this beautiful nazm recited by Gulzar on my iPod and iTunes endlessly. Do listen (click on the title below).

MAUSAM KA JHAUNKA….

Hosted by eSnips

Evokes a [...]

For fun….

Too many things going on to blog regularly. But meanwhile, if you want some humor in your life, engage in a chuckle or two at the expense of Indian mainstream media web-site’s mandatory idiocy and the bizarre depths of absurdity it can plunge itself.

It’s Abhishek v/s SRK in NY

So screams a Rediff headline. Eh [...]
